Safety

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Terrain are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Terrain has standard Reverse Automatic Braking that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer automatic braking for stationary objects directly to the rear.

Both the Terrain and the Range Rover Evoque have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

Warranty

GMC’s powertrain warranty covers the Terrain 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Land Rover covers the Range Rover Evoque. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Range Rover Evoque ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 8 times as many GMC dealers as there are Land Rover dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Terrain’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that GMC vehicles are better in initial quality than Land Rover vehicles. With 13 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks GMC higher than Land Rover.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that GMC vehicles are more reliable than Land Rover With 62 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks GMC higher than Land Rover.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Terrain gets better mileage than the Range Rover Evoque:

1.5 turbo 4-cyl.

26 city/28 hwy

AWD

24 city/28 hwy

Range Rover Evoque

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the GMC Terrain uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Range Rover Evoque requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

The Terrain has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Transmission

The Terrain FWD has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer a CVT.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Terrain’s wheelbase is 2 inches longer than on the Range Rover Evoque (107.5 inches vs. 105.5 inches).

For better maneuverability, the Terrain’s turning circle is .9 feet tighter than the Range Rover Evoque’s (37.1 feet vs. 38 feet).

Chassis

The GMC Terrain may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 500 to 700 pounds less than the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.

The front grille of the Terrain uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Terrain uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The Terrain has 1.1 inches more front headroom, .6 inches more front legroom, 1.1 inches more front shoulder room, .9 inches more rear headroom, 5.2 inches more rear legroom and .3 inches more rear shoulder room than the Range Rover Evoque.

Cargo Capacity

The Terrain has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Range Rover Evoque with its rear seat up (29.8 vs. 21.6 cubic feet). The Terrain has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Range Rover Evoque with its rear seat folded (63.5 vs. 50.5 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

The Terrain’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Range Rover Evoque does not have an oil pressure gauge.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Terrain has standard extendable sun visors. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Terrain keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

Model Availability

The Terrain is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Recommendations

The GMC Terrain outsold the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque by over 19 to one during 2023.
